Music I listen to

Hmmm. Difficult one. Film scores, in particular John Williams, especially his work for Jurassic Park and Prisoner of Azkaban. Also enjoyed Patrick Doyle's work for Goblet of Fire. Like Will Young too. Also anything you can sing along to as I can't dance along to it any more.

Movies I like

Saw the new Star Trek film at the weekend. Fantastic. Loved it. The casting is brilliant. James T Kirk is just like.... James T Kirk, William Shatner. Bit more cheeky than cheesy though. Excellent, thoroughly entertaining. :) Looking forward to the next HP film, Half Blood Prince.

Books that moved me

The Secret Garden, Frances Hodgson Burnett. The Jennings Books, Anthony Buckeridge. Lord of the Rings, Tolkein. The Harry Potter Books, J K Rowling. Northanger Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen. Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Graham. Disc World novels, Terry Pratchet. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams... I could go on and on here.

Just finished Julian Clary's latest book, Devil in Disguise. Fluff with a dark side. Very good, fairly 'graphic'. Not one to leave around where the children may read a few chapters! Not unless you want to do a whole lot of explaining. Still, another side to Julian Clary. Interesting.

Memory of my one and only trip to New York to see Equus. Most exciting thing I've ever done. Brilliant.

Groovy quotes

All I ever really needed to know I learned in Nursery School

Most of what I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in Nursery School. Wisdom was not at the top of the university mountain but there in the sandbox at nursery school..

These are the things I learned. Share everything. Play fair. Don't hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don't take things that aren't yours. Say sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush the toilet. Warm milk and biscuits are good for you. Live a balanced life. Learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.

When you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands and stick together. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the plastic cup. The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.

Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the plastic cup - they all die. So do we..

And then remember the book about Janet and John and the first word you learned. The Biggest word of all: LOOK. Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and sane living.

Think what a better world it would be if we all - the whole world - had warm milk and biscuits at 10.30 every morning. Or if we had a basic policy in our nation and other nations to always put things back where we found them and cleaned up our own mess. And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.
